We will
remember...
Lee Price
Dear Pat,
I wanted to let MWBH members know of Lee's death from pancreatic
cancer on January 17. He died at home with our family around and
with the support of our local hospice group. At his request, he
was buried at sea by the U.S. Navy off of Jacksonville, FL. He had
served 26 years in the Navy, retiring in 1992.
If anyone asks
about memorials, we would welcome support for HospiceCare, 5395
E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711, in the name of Leland H. Price.
Thank you,
Peggy Price, Knollwood Books

BOOK FAIR
MANAGER -POSITION AVAILABLE
As you may
be aware, Joycelyn Merchant has advised us she has decided to forego
the MWBH Chicago Area Book Fair Manager duties following the May
6 Loyola Book Fair in order to devote more time to her jewelry design
business. Joycelyn has done an excellent job for us in the Book
Fair Manager capacity and we have been fortunate to have had a person
of her caliber providing that valuable service for our organization.
She is interested in continuing in her MWBH Coordinator capacity,
however, and the board has met and determined we wish her to do
so.
So, the Midwest
Bookhunters organization is in search of a new Chicago area Book
Fair Manager. Any MWBH member interested in being considered for
this paid position is asked to submit a letter to the MWBH board
by June 1, 2001, specifying such interest and indicating their qualifica-tions
and experience for such position. Questions may be directed to myself,
any board member, or to Joycelyn.

New Newsletter
Feature
Pat Martinak
has made what I consider to be an outstanding recommendation for
a regular segment inclusion for our MWBH newsletter. She has suggested
we feature a MWBH member and their book business in each newsletter
issue. The member chosen can tell us about themselves and their
book business, their interests, specialty areas, etc. In this way
we can learn more about our fellow members and their book activities,
and in the process, help them to perhaps gain more business through
this excellent free advertising opportunity. And, we can hopefully
learn some things which may help us to enhance our own businesses,
too. Those interested in having their businesses highlighted should
submit their names to Pat. To be fair to all interested, we will
draw out of a hat the business to be featured in each subsequent
newsletter from the names submitted.

Children's
Book Illustrator Featured in Kerlan Exhibit
The spring
issue of the Kerlan Collection (Children's Literature Research Collections
at the University of Minnesota) newsletter announced a new exhibit:
Heroes and Legends: Book Illustrations by Charles Mikolaycak, April
4 through May 25, 2001. The exhibit featured approximately thirty
drawings of Mikolaycak and illustrate the process he uses to develop
illustrations from thumbnail sketches to finished publication.
After starting
his career as an illustrator and designer, Mikolaycak illustrated
his first book for children in 1967. He is perhaps best know for
his illustrations of folktales such as Babushka: An Old Russian
Folktale (Holiday House, 1984), whose story he also adapted. Besides
this and other drawings for Cricket Magazine, Mikolaycak has illustrated
books by many well- known authors, among them Jane Yolen and Eve
Bunting. His work has a strong sense of mood, time, and place, never
"drawing down" for children. The Kerlan contains production
material for seventy-two of his titles. Mikolaycak received the
1987 Kerlan Award for his contributions to children's literature.
He died on June 23, 1993.
This information,
as well as other news about children's literature, may be accessed
at the Kerlan web
site. The Kerlan has been a past beneficiary of the MWBH.
