Board Election Results

128 ballots were mailed, of which 68 were returned. The totals were very close. Eimi Andrews-Rose, Becky Scott, Richard Wunsch and Hank Zuchowski will be returning to the board; Chris Rohe and Lawrence Van De Carr are our new board members.

The transition between the ten-member and twelve-member boards will be complete with the next election; Becky and Larry will be serving the transitional one year terms.

Book Fair News and Info

Although there was no survey for the Spring Book Fair at Loyola, many dealers reported that it was successful for them. Participants had a more positive attitude, and seemed to be happier with the location. The general atmosphere at the show was good, with no major glitches or disasters. Loyola personnel were most helpful and supportive as well.

Attendance was similar to the attendance at the Fall, 1999 Navy Pier Fair. Many patrons returned the $1.00 off postcards which we mail out, so it appears that all of our mailing lists remain the major source of book fair customers. Thanks very much to those dealers who also sent out their MWBH postcards.

We would like to return to Loyola, but they do not always have the dates we need available because of their sporting events schedules, especially in the Fall. Spring seems like a more viable option for us there.

At least one copy of the updates and additions insert for the membership directory will be sent to each member. If anyone still has a large supply of directories and did not pick up enough updates at the book fair, please let me know, so that we can send whatever you need. If someone has a quantity of membership booklets which are not being used, let us know so that they can be redistributed if necessary.

Richard will be doing internet and mail order business, but will be open by appointment to visitors.

Carlos Martinez wrote to say that Bibliodisia Books will be moving as of August 2, 2000 to 4400 South Spaulding Street in Chicago.

Traveller's Tales Books, proprietor Jill Hill, in Picton, Ontario reports that her shop is changing direction. They are closing the bed and breakfast operation, and beginning about July 15th, they were planning to open a shop in town: about 2000 square feet, wheelchair accessible, lots of nearby parking, bright, beautiful, comfortable, with about 20,000 good books. Her new shop in Picton will have e-mail etc., but it won't be hooked up until July, 2000. Her e-mail, in New Zealand only, is: travellers.tales@clear.net.uz

Brian Burhoe, of The Old Bookseller in Oak Park, writes of his partner, Charlie Shields: "Charlie Shields had a mild stroke in August of 1999. His mind and speech are OK, but he has partial paralysis of his left side, and is unable to sit, stand, or walk by himself. He is still confined to a rehabilitation center, Salem Village in Joliet. His progress is slow, but he is making some progress.

Brian is also selling The Old Bookseller, located at 808 Harrison, Oak Park, Il. Brian says, "The store has been in operation for 29 years with Saturday only hours. It has a long established customer base and has good potential for growth if the hours of operation are expanded. The store is on Harrison just west of Oak Park Ave., fronts the Eisenhower expressway, and is very close to the Oak Park CTA Rapid Transit station.
